1. the occurrence of two different forms of the same plant, animal, organ, or substance: a) Botany. the occurrence of two different forms of flowers, leaves, or other parts on the same plant or in the same species, as in the disk and ray florets of the daisy, or the young and adult foliage of eucalyptus. b) Zoology. the occurrence of two forms different in structure, coloration, etc., among animals of the same species. c) Chemistry, Mineralogy. the property of some substances of crystallizing in two different forms.
2. Linguistics. the occurrence in a language of two or more words, such as dent and dint or church and kirk, that come from the same source.
